Welwitchia University and Harare Institute of Public Health Sign Landmark Memorandum of Understanding

Windhoek, Namibia – [26 March 2025] – Welwitchia University (WU) and the Harare Institute of Public Health (HIPH) today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), solidifying a strategic partnership aimed at advancing education, research, and community engagement in the field of public health. The signing ceremony took place at the Welwitchia University City Campus in Windhoek, Namibia.

Professor Hedimbi, Vice Chancellor of Welwitchia University, and Mr. Amos Marume, Principal of Harare Institute of Public Health, signed the MoU, marking a commitment to collaborate on several key initiatives. The ceremony was attended by Dr. Monica Pendukeni, Welwitchia University Co-founder and Council Chairperson, and Professor Scholastica Iipinge, the University's Chancellor, highlighting the significance of this partnership.

"This collaboration with the Harare Institute of Public Health aligns perfectly with Welwitchia University's mission to provide quality education and contribute to the wellbeing of our communities," said Professor Hedimbi. "Together, we can create impactful programs that address critical public health challenges."

The MoU outlines the following objectives:
  • Student and Staff Exchange Programs: Facilitating mobility to promote global perspectives and professional growth.
  • Community Engagement: Launching and supporting Integrated Skills Expansion Outreach Programs.
  • Qualifications Harmonization: Establishing mutual recognition of qualifications to ease academic transitions.
  • Research Collaborations: Conducting joint research projects in mutually agreed areas of interest.
  • Technology Transfer: Sharing intellectual property and innovations for societal benefit.
  • Cultural and Sports Exchange: Encouraging interaction to foster understanding and diversity.
  • Resource Sharing: Optimizing the use of facilities and resources for academic and research purposes.
  • Training and Development: Enhancing the capacity of staff through joint workshops and training initiatives.
  • Student Support: Providing scholarships and fellowships to promote academic success.

Following the signing ceremony, the HIPH delegation toured Welwitchia University's City Campus, Lafrenz Campus, and the satellite campus at Lady Pohamba Hospital, gaining insight into the university's resources and capabilities.

A Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) has been established to oversee the implementation of the MoU, ensuring that the partnership's goals are effectively pursued. The JCC will meet bi-annually to evaluate progress, address challenges, and update objectives as needed.
